New Ideas Contest
Enter by September 20, 2010

Winners will be announced at the Small Business Innovation Summit and Expo in Charleston, South Carolina, on November 3. The grand prize winner will receive $5,000 in seed money for his or her business idea, a scholarship to a FastTrac entrepreneurial training program, tickets to the Small Business Innovation Summit and Expo and a Dream Team of Mentors to help cultivate the idea.

Five first place prizes of $2,500 will be awarded in the categories of Bio-Science, Software/Information Technology, Engineering, Environmental Sustainability and Wild Card. Each winner will receive a scholarship to FastTrac and tickets to the Small Business Innovation Summit and Expo. There will also be five $1,000 honorable mention prizes distributed in each category.

America’s Got Net Video Contest
Enter by September 30, 2010

This contest is is open to U.S.-based individuals, small businesses and nonprofit/charitable organizations that demonstrate the benefits of the open Internet.

Video entries will be judged by some of the Internet’s most influential celebrities; winners will receive a prize package containing an Amazon Kindle DX, Google Nexus One Phone, Slingbox PRO-HD, Skype mobile phone plus one year of Skype Unlimited World Calling, and a Sony bloggie. Small business and nonprofit winners will also win free advertising and promotion, the chance to be featured in an Open Internet Coalition ad campaign, and a VIP trip to Washington, DC, to meet with key decision-makers on the open Internet.

UPS Entrepreunerial Spirit Award

In an effort to recognize SMEs for their entrepreneurial spirit in demonstrating innovative ideas and practices that have resulted in a successful business, UPS has launched the “UPS Entrepreneurial Spirit Award” in Latin America. The three most innovative and successful SMEs across 14 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean will have the opportunity to compete for more than US$50,000 in cash and Hewlett-Packard equipment by entering the contest, which runs from August 16th through September 30th. PITCH: Women 2.0 Startup Competition

Open to early-stage ventures around the world, from high-growth business ventures in Web 2.0 to mobile, from enterprise Web/mobile to consumer clean/biotech. Applying companies must be in the beta stage and have not received significant funding.

Great Emerging Franchise Challenge

Launch Lewiston-Auburn Maine Contest
Enter by January 2011

The Lewiston-Auburn Economic Growth Council (LAEGC) and the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce have launched an entrepreneurial contest that has an ambitious goal of connecting with youth who have roots in the local community, and encouraging them to consider starting a business in Lewiston-Auburn, Maine. The program, called Launch L-A!, features a contest inviting young entrepreneurs to submit a proposal to start a business in L-A.

The winning entrepreneur will receive an equity infusion of $10,000 to $20,000 in seed money, along with a number of in-kind services for a year, including business consulting, accounting services, legal fees, advertising agency services, rent and more — all provided by Chamber members. Runners-up may also receive in-kind services. See website for entry rules.

Going green or adopting a proactive stance on sustainable practices has risen to the level of mainstream conversation in the same way that other business practices such as safety and training have.

oreo kitsBut, truly creating a green culture goes much deeper than buying energy efficient light bulbs, monitoring computer energy, recycling waste and committing to earth friendly marketing, manufacturing and shipping processes.

In fact, it goes deeper than creating green events, employee rideshares, community gardens, sustainable design, coworking and collaborative offices.

While these are important elements in the cycle, a true green business comes from embracing the idea at level of a higher purpose or what some might call mission.

Being green isn’t just about recycling, it’s about nurturing, growing things, instead of just using them. In fact, being green has as much to do with purpose and people as it does plastic and paper.

Green business practices can be inconvenient and in some cases more expensive to implement so often, like safety and training initiatives they are given lots of ink in the annual report, but exist at only the most basic level.

Policy can only take an organization so far. The deepest green is about growth and nurturing at the cultural level of a business.

If a company’s primary purpose is to grow and nurture its people, community, industry and planet, then even the smallest business can call itself green in a way that makes a meaningful difference.

The outcome of this kind of thinking is a green business that happens to make or sell something rather than a business the adopts green principles.

The simplest way to move your organization to this way of thinking is to tackle it from both ends. In other words, hire at the most basic level, people that embrace green thinking and embrace, at the highest level, audacious green goals, such as building a company that produces zero net waste.

The combination of this top down and bottom up thinking at the tactical level can help an organization start living nurturing at its roots.

For some inspiration check out TerraCycle, a company with a business model that creates products from other people’s waste streams and has a net negative manufacturing cost – other people pay them to acquire their raw material.

Manage Your Business Taxes With Wealth Creation for Small Business Owners E-mail

OK, while no one wants to confront a taxman like The Beatles’ “Taxman,” it is clear that with business comes profits, and with profits comes taxes.  But it’s complicated figuring out the best way to retain earnings to not only maintain business wealth, but also handle essentials such as employee payroll, funding retirement programs and offering affordable health insurance.

To give you an initial review of the consequences of various financial decisions, read Wealth Creation for Small Business Owners by James Cheeks.  An adjunct graduate business professor at Pace University, Cheeks has crafted an assured guide based on his years offering legal and tax advice for small businesses.  Wealth Creation is a splendid a la carte guide for figuring out what financial moves can lead to increased wealth. I picked up a review copy while researching a recent finance book, and felt the tips would be good ones to share with small businesses, family-run firms and solopreneurs.

Chart your way to retaining capital

The book offers 75 tax advantage strategies in all, each truly a good aid and based on rules in effect as of late 2009. The book has a unique organization system for these strategies called the Wealth Opportunities Audit (WOA).  The Wealth Opportunities Audit is a chart that matches each offered strategy with situations that the reader may be in or considering.  Need help establishing health care for employees?  Try Health.  Don’t know what a SIMPLE (Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees) is?  Go to Strategy 6.   Additional topics include family, retirement, expansion, equipment, succession planning and business premises.

This arrangement allows readers unfamiliar with tax concerns to quickly find actions that can be refined, while also allowing those who are more seasoned the ability to cherry-pick subjects as needed. Sweet.

Who will benefit from the strategies offered?

  • Family-owned firms looking to transfer a business or wealth within the family
  • Business looking to add heath care and insurance benefits
  • Startups operating from home
  • Owners who are considering retirement plans
  • Entrepreneurs considering equipment purchases or arrangement of specific assets

While the book does focus on retaining wealth, the strategies are not presented in a cheesy make-money-now style.  For example, Cheeks addresses the suggestion to add a family member:

“Lots of people tell the entrepreneur to put his kid on the payroll. It’s a way, they say, to shift tax on what the kid is paid from parent to kid…But let’s get real about what it’s worth. The tax saved is trivial in most cases, because the kid’s work is trivial…Take on family members who are capable to do work you’d otherwise pay someone else for.”

Cheeks reasonably anticipates the changes ahead, though without a lot of detail.  When discussing health care, for example, Cheeks does note that health care regulations change is anticipated for 2013 (he provides a link for updates).  Finally, Cheeks is good at recommending methods business owners can use to compensate themselves in a business, and states in plain English the thought behind each strategy.

While it is a short guide, Wealth Creation for Small Business Owners offers enough help and flexibility for business owners in many different  situations who are seeking tax breaks.  The standard footnotes apply here: Seeking advice for specific tax concerns is always wise.  But this book will aid those discussions that will lead to serious wealth growth.
