Grade School Entrepreneurs E-mail

In ‘96 when Apple was celebrating its 20th anniversary, Jacob Cook was being born. Just 13 years later and he is now an entrepreneur says Forbes.

Cook, who lives in Sacramento, Calif., has been an entrepreneur for three years. At age 10 he started buying books and other “low-end stuff” at garage sales and re-selling it on eBay. As he learned more about computers, he started creating video tutorials about fixing tech problems and broadcasting them on YouTube. After he was profiled in a local newspaper, people started contacting him with their own troubleshooting requests. Today he charges up to $30 an hour to help clients erase computer viruses and fix other problems.

“People told me that when I’m older I should start a business,” says Cook. “I thought I should start one now.”

Electric scooter's battery lifts out for easy charging anywhere E-mail

Electric scooters may be increasingly popular as an emissions-free transportation option, but charging them can be a hassle. With that in mind, UK-based Econogo has come up with the Yogo, a scooter whose battery is designed to be removed for easier charging.

Most electric scooters are powered by built-in batteries. One result of that fact is that recharging them typically involves running a cable from a building to wherever the vehicle is parked and then waiting several hours for a full charge. That may work fine for those with easy access to a garage; for urbanites and apartment-dwellers, not so much. Econogo's newly launched solution: a scooter with a Lithium battery that can be simply lifted out, brought inside and charged within an hour. With a top speed of 30 miles per hour and a battery life of 22 miles, the Yogo is priced at GBP 1,999.

Econogo currently sells its scooters though its London showroom; one to partner with for scooter fans in other parts of the world? (Related: Lightweight electric bike targets urban commutersFolding electric two-wheeler offers new take on urban cyclingEmissions-free motorcycle taxis.)

Searchandise Commerce Raises $7M To Help Product Makers Pay For Placement on Online Retailer Search Ranks E-mail

searchendise.png
Searchandise Commerce (fka Guidester) has raised $7M in series 2 financing Led by Madrona Venture Group with existing investors Cloquet Capital Partners, DFJ Gotham Partners, Draper Associates, Inflection Point Ventures, Milestone Venture Partners and Wheatley Partners. The company had raised $7.5M in July 2008.

Beverly, MA-based Searchandise is paid search for retail sites. The analogy is that when you visit a Walmart of your local drug store you will find products front and center and the product manufucturer has paid for that choice location in order to distance themselves from rival products.

With Searchandise manufacturers can pay for top rank or closer to top rank location on search results on online retailer sites or comparrision shopping sites. Searchandise says it delivers more than 250M visitors per month and more than 100M unique users per month.

We think its a great concept all a way around as it works for each party involved and the consumer doesn't mind or is none the wiser.

Bringing A Smarter Search To Twitter E-mail

The New York Times is reporting that Bill Gross, the serial entrepreneur who pioneered search advertising, is unveiling a venture that aims to make money by allowing people using Twitter to bid on key words to give their posts top ranking.

Called TweetUp, the service will also organize the posts according to their popularity as measured by how often readers repost them and click on links they contain.

Gross said he had signed deals with other outside Twitter services like Seesmic, TwitterFeed and Twidroid to display TweetUp’s rankings. A TweetUp search bar will appear on Web sites like Answers.com and BusinessInsider.com. TweetUp will split revenue evenly with each partner, he said.

The goal is to cut through the clutter of thousands of irrelevant posts on topics of interest and keep the useful ones from disappearing into a torrent of messages.

The gamble is whether Twitter users who have turned the microblogging service into global communications phenomenon will be willing to pay to get their 140-character messages noticed — and whether other Twitter users will view such paid placement as legitimate.

Evaluate Yourself, Your Business E-mail

If you’re a business owner than Christine Davis, writing for SeacoastOnline.com, believes that you should have asked yourself “Should I be doing this?” at least once during the life of your business.

This crappy recession does have a bit of a silver lining that I am going to go out on a limb and share: We may not like it, but our current economy is actually forcing some businesses and nonprofits to make decisions that in the long run could well create better and stronger organizations. We are stepping back and re-evaluating our business models and making changes to improve what we do and offer.

Those that adapt and innovate will succeed. Those that don’t (or can’t) will fold. It seems as if we are living in this feast-or-famine scenario, and perhaps what will come of this is a healthier economy that is neither feast nor famine.

I am also seeing a number of small business owners struggling for reasons outside of the economy. If you are struggling, I hope that you stop and ask yourself, “Is what I expected? Can I do everything that is needed to be successful? If I do, will I be happy?”

Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur even when times are good, and there is no shame in admitting to that. To really make a go of it, you have got to be 100 percent in the game.
